MARSHALL MEDICAL CENTER NAMED IN 2019 OPIOID CARE AND PATIENT SAFETY HONOR ROLLS

Marshall is honored to be named by California Health and Human Services, along with Cal Hospital Compare for excellence in patient care and safety.

According to state data, nearly 2,200 Californians died of an opioid-related overdose in 2017. Patients with opioid use disorder are frequently hospitalized or visit the emergency department due to complications of their addiction, but are typically only treated for their symptoms rather than the underlying disease of addiction. Marshall is changing that for El Dorado County. Patients who visit the emergency department are treated for their acute symptoms, but also receive buprenorphine to relieve cravings and withdrawal symptoms. In addition, they are given a next day appointment at Marshall Clinically Assisted Recovery and Education Services (CARES) where they receive ongoing support from a team of experts including medical providers, social workers and group sessions. As a result of these efforts, El Dorado County saw only seven deaths due to opioid-related overdoses in 2018.

The Patient Safety Honor Roll uses objective, publicly available patient safety measures to evaluate hospitals across a variety of domains including hospital acquired infections, adverse patient safety events, sepsis management, patient experience and Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

“For this fiscal year, we’ve had approximately 35 hospital acquired infections,” says Kathy Krejci, Chief Nursing Officer at Marshall. “An extremely low rate that is a direct result of our patient safety and infection control efforts. We’re very proud to be among the elite hospital named on this honor roll.”

Honor Roll hospitals must meet a rigorous threshold of performance by meeting at least 2/3 of the measurement results above the 50th percentile and no measure result below the 10th percentile. They must also receive a Leapfrong Hospital Safetry Grade A for the past three reporting periods.

Marshall is one of only a handful of hospitals in the greater Sacramento area to receive this honor.
