NEW MARSHALL HOSPITAL ROBOT TAKES ON DEADLY SUPERBUGS

February, 2018 —No matter how carefully hospitals work to eliminate the germs that cause C-Diff, MRSA and other Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs), nationwide, 750,000 people are infected annually and 75,000 die at acute care hospitals each year.

To reduce the incidents of HAIs, Marshall Hospital acquired a germ-zapping robot whose bright pulses of UV-C light kill 99.9% of bacteria, spores and viruses it encounters. The Xenex Lightstrike robot, aptly named “Flash,” went to work cleaning patient rooms in December.

“On top of the consistently meticulous cleaning our housekeepers do every day, we now have this germ-zapping robot as an added layer of protection for the health and well being of our patients,” Housekeeping Director Kelli Williams said. “It gives us peace of mind to know we are doing everything possible to eliminate harm to our patients.”

Xenon-gas bulbs produce the robot’s germ-killing UV-C light, which also eliminates the germs that cause Anthrax, Ebola and Norovirus. “The robot levels the playing field. Our first goal is to stop the pain and suffering caused by these infections,” said Marshall Infection Preventionist Nina Deatherage.
