Marshall Releases Community Health Needs Assessment

Marshall released its findings in the latest Community Health Needs Assessment report.

Produced every three years, the report pulls critical data from focus groups and community surveys to determine the needs of El Dorado County residents. The survey was submitted to the Office of State-Wide Health Planning and Development.

“A whole report is generated and prioritized and a list is given for the most pressing health needs of the county. An implementation strategy is made to address these needs,” said Lourdes Edralin, director of Marketing and Communications for Marshall Medical.

“We did collaborate with other hospitals to determine what we need to do together. We ascertain what the most significant things are and what’s most important to improve. We give each other strength and try to move the needle in a positive way to create change.”

The top concerns listed were access to behavioral health, a safe, crime and violence free community and active living and healthy eating.

“Access to behavioral health specialists has risen to the top and we are adding a clinical psychiatrist at the Marshall and are actively recruiting for more,” said Edralin. A plan is in place to provide additional substance abuse prevention and treatment services, as well as the recruitment of licensed clinical social workers.

A safe, crime and violence free community was second on the list.

“The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office tracks statistical data on crime in our county. We strive on a daily basis to provide the best services we can to make our community a safe place to live, work and recreate,” said sheriff’s Sgt. Tasha Thompson.

Crime data in the CHNA is courtesy of the California Department of Justice, said Mark DeVaughn, spokesman for Marshall.

Placerville Police Department’s Cm. Kim Nida said the department works with Marshall to address public safety needs that may arise in and about the hospital and clinics in the Placerville area.

This is the second time Marshall has participated in the survey. In 2013, the findings, Edralin explained, were “very similar.”

Marshall CEO James Whipple said that the CHNA’s scope reflects Marshall’s mission; to improve the community’s health by giving quality, patient-centered health services.

“I really appreciated the passion of all the community, the providers and other health care services that came together,” he said. “They all not only identified the issues but also the community-wide commitment to addressing those health problems.”
